An extraordinary outsider art center in Vielsalm

The "S" Grand Atelier in Vielsalm combines outsider and contemporary art in an inclusive and innovative approach. A shared creative space for mentally disabled artists and professionals, redefining the boundaries of art.


1. Presentation of the "S" Grand Atelier

Located in Vielsalm (Place des Chasseurs Ardennais 31), the "S" Grand Atelier is a center for outsider and contemporary art, labeled by the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.

It is a true artistic laboratory offering workshops (visual arts, performing arts), residencies, exhibitions, and outreach programs. 

In this place, so-called "outsider" artists (often mentally disabled) work daily, supervised by professionals, with freedom and dignity. The atelier also encourages co-creation with contemporary artists, enriching the dialogue between margins and institutional art.

2.1 Exhibitions & outreach

Among its initiatives, the "S" acts as coordinator of the project PHOTO | BRUT BXL, a multidisciplinary exhibition in Brussels (CENTRALE, Botanique, Art & Marges) focused on "raw" photography and self-taught artists. 

It also offers a rich exhibition program: the "S" website lists numerous past exhibitions mixing outsider and contemporary art, with varied themes. 

 

2.2 Inclusive & cultural mission

The "S" claims an approach that goes beyond the simple therapeutic dimension: its activities aim to evolve perceptions of disability, value uniqueness, and provide visibility to often marginalized artists. 

In a rural area like the Ardennes, it also plays the role of a local cultural center, offering workshops to residents, meetings, and events to energize the cultural territory.
